Thomas Aschenbrener has been and advocate for the Cherry Trail since the issue was on the table almost five months ago. He has been an ally in supporting the Trail Access Campaing (TAC) by not only being a voice for our cause but he has helped our team navigating the challenges of reopening access to the beach via the dune (AKA Cherry Trail).
To that end, He has recently met with the new City Manager John Kunkel to discuss his discomfort with the speed of the process thus far and advocated that we needed something clear regarding the next steps in the process. Using Chris Berhardt's (The consultant established by the city to help review the trail) final report as a guide, he believes the next and most crucial step is to have the GeoTechnical survey and engineering components addressed. They have discussed seeking bids for an appropriate survey. Chris has agreed to help the city define the scope of work required for the engineers, to save time, and get only what is needed from them. As far as Thomas can see, this is the most crucial part of the process. Once the City has the engineering bids, Thomas will arrange for TAC, and John Kunkel, to go over the plans. The goal is to have an action item at the next council meeting on November 4 that defines the remaining steps in the approval process -- so that we all have clarity. These will essentially be the elements in Berhardt's final report plus a public hearing with TAC for the project. Thomas has reiterated that the Cherry Trail needs to be a city project in which TAC participates. Since this project is not budgeted, TAC has offered to cover the costs (which will need to be negotiated). Regardless if the City accepts the contribution for building the trail Thomas has mentioned the engineering surveys must remain under the auspice of the City due to liability concerns. We appreciate Thomas's support and look forward to breaking ground sooner than later!
