We have received a number of emails regarding the recent trail closure for Classic Ridge. We have decided to share some of those emails here in effort to show that this issue is very much a community challenge that affects all residents of Classic Ridge. We have removed last names and references to address’s to help maintain anonymity of those who wrote in.
It is important to note that we have contacted the residents that intersect with the properties to discuss options. They have yet to reply to our inquiries. It is our hope that if they see these letters of concern they will be more apt to open up discussions.

We are property owners on Hemlock and have enjoyed the path for over 20 years We are eager to be involved in any way to provide a solution. I got this website from talking with a friend of many years who works at [law firm] who thinks this is a very strong case. Thank you!
I have sent the link to other homeowners in the area.

I owned a weekend house on University Ave for 18 years, so I know the trail. It certainly qualifies as an easement via Utility accessibility. And because it has been a Community path to the beach for decades, it could be an Community /Adverse Possession easement.

[Dear Trail Access]
We're writing in support of trail access to the beach from Classic Ridge. We've owned the house [near the trail] and have walked the historic beach trail there for decades, both while we lived there as primary residents and when it has been our secondary home.
When we bought the house 27 years ago we were told the trail would always be there and accessible because it follows a sewage easement line. It was a primary reason we chose the house we did: We loved having that beautiful wooded trail to walk down to the beach and have truly treasured it over the years.
Public access to the beach and preserving beautiful natural public areas are two aspects of the Oregon coast that make it so spectacular and unique. The City has a park at the South end of town, plus the Nehalem Bay State Park there but could benefit greatly from a park or public area plus better beach access (now that this historic trail is fenced is) at the North end as well.
It also endangers public safety to have no route up from the beach for such a long stretch of land north of North Street.
Enhancing walkability and preserving natural areas for public enjoyment and environmental preservation are hallmarks of the best kind of city planning. Such measures make life safer, happier and healthier for all of us, now and for generations to come. We urge you to support such measures and trail access to the beach for Classic Ridge and all of Manzanita.
Sincerely, Jean and Bob

I own a house [near the trail] in Manzanita and have noticed the trail that we take down to the beach is closed with a sign that said to email this address. Could you tell me who closed this trail and when it will be open again? We can no longer take the sand dune because of dune stabilization, so the only way to get down to the beach is the street, which can be a little dangerous with kids. Any information you can give me about the trail is much appreciated.
Thank you, Janie

I am a Classic Ridge resident and was so sorry to find the beach trail closed several weeks ago. I have used it for nearly twenty years -- and on a daily basis for at least the past ten years. Can you please let me know what the current status is and any plans you have to address the issue?
Many thanks, Sue
[Dear Trail Access]
I am very interested in this concern and would like to help however I can. I do not live full time in Manzanita, but own a home there and come often and am involved in other events and activities. I have been very involved for several years in developing a new trail that will connect NK Mountain south trailhead to Nehalem Road (through property recently acquired by Lower Nehalem Community Trust).

I am an architect who designed a beach house on University Avenue. It was completed in August 1996. The house was sold after 18 years so I am seldom in Manzanita anymore. The beach trail around the duck pond to the Neahkahnie beach was my favorite footpath. It must be protected. The public should not be deprived of this richly-appreciated community asset. Please let me know what sort of committee work is needed. Hopefully I will be able to help.
Regards, Dennis

I've been out of town for awhile and have been watching the BBQ conversation about the neighborhood social trail being closed. Wondering what the current story is? I enjoy using that path for my daily walk. Please let me know the current status - thanks much!

I hope this email finds you well. I live on [a street near the trail] and used to take that trail which has been closed. Would you happen to have some details on its closure?
Thank you.

Sooooo… what’s the story? Why is the trail fenced on the west end?
Thanks, Pete

This is Vivian and Robert living [in a house near the trail]. We recently learned about the trail closure and would like to learn more about the reason and how we may help resolve the issue. Is there a website or similar location we can access to learn more?
Thank you, Robert and Vivian

Is there somewhere we can go to find out the state of play and what possibilities there are for making this trail accessible again. We have had a home on Classic Ridge for 20 years and have been using and loving this trail all this time. What a shame to block it off...
Warmly, Charles

What is the story here?

I have a vacation home 5 blocks from the trail from University Street to the beach. Just curious why it is closed. Is it just during the Coronavirus outbreak or is something else going on?

We are new to the neighborhood, but have used the trail quite a bit in the last year. If there's anything we can do to help please let us know. It seems crazy to us that a trail that has so much history and is also on Google maps could be closed down. We're hoping there is an easement and enough history that this trail can remain open for the community.

I have the [home near the trail]. We have lost beach access, and my wife was [approached] by the property owner at the end of beach st. When she was trying to access the easement.

Please provide information on why the trail, which has been being used for decades, is suddenly blocked and who I should talk to to find out how to get it unblocked.
Thanks, Brian

I’m curious why the beach access trail is barricaded?
Thanks, Mike

Hello I live part time at the area around university and college street. have used the trail regularly for the last 20 years. Let me know whats going on to try to get this opened up again. Petitions, letters to city council etc.

[Dear Trail Access]
I live up on university avenue in Manzanita and like many other residents have used that path for a decade or more. Closing the trail to the people who live here doesn’t seem right just for one persons property. I feel like there is a solution to be made that doesn’t completely block the trail. Is there a reasonable explanation as to why there is now multiple gates blocking the community trail?
Thanks, Cooper
[Dear Trail Access]
We have heard the trail off [a street near the trail] in Tillamook County is being closed to traffic by some property owner at the lower end. As I understand the trail is over a sewer easement and has been used by residents and guests in Manzanita for over 13 years. As an owner of a property in Manzanita adjacent to the trails we hope that the owner would reconsider as the trail has become a great way to access the beach for many homeowners on College Ave.

Hey just curious what is up with the blocked access to the beach? We have been using that trail for over 20 years. Please keep us informed. Thanks!

[Dear Trail Access]
The trail below our condo, down the hillside and along the wetland to the beach has been in use since well before we bought our place at 107 College Avenue, more than ten years ago. It is a large, obvious trail that has been used regularly my family and by many, many other people throughout the year.
The trail is valuable to us and to all others who seek to view the wetland and get to the beach from the area around College Avenue. The property owner, who has endured our use for so many years, should not be permitted to object to it now.

As part of the [a] Family and having a residence for over 50 years at [a street] near the trail, and having used that trail and other access to beach points for decades we do find it not in the General interest of the community to have barb wire across the entry points to that trail.
In our opinion it’s not in the interest of the community not only from a beach access standpoint for the Classic Ridge residents but also from a safety standpoint for beach goers to have a fast path to altitude should a Tsunami strike our Coast !
What is unknown to us is who owns the land the trail is on - who owns the access points; what are Manzanita ordinances in regards to beach access when it also involves private property ?
Thank you for having a forum for which to communicate 😁

Why has this trail been blocked at the west end at Beach St?
Bernard
[Dear Trail Access]
I am an owner at [a location near the trail] and my family has owned [the property] for over 50 years. We want guaranteed trail access from the top of Classic Ridge. The trail could go around the barb wired trail (built below it around the property line), or a trail could pop out at the sand dune, or hard left on Cherry where it hooks- where there is a designated road that was never built (we could put in concrete steps). Besides historic access, if there were a tsunami, the trail up could be a quick way up to higher ground. Right now, someone's driveway is serving that purpose. The City could ask for raised funds to build a pop out trail or steps in any location. Our family group is behind you!
Thank you for working on this!

Hello this is Beth-Ann. Our family has owned the beach property [near the trail] since 1969. Over the years we have lost access to the beach due to new construction and homeowners restricting that access. The trail on the north end of Cherry St. is currently our only access besides College St. as a longer alternative. We are very disappointed to learn of the barbed wire that has been placed across this only access trail to the beach from this part of Classic Ridge.
Feel free to contact me, Beth-Ann

As a homeowner in the area, I am concerned about the blockage of the existing trail and would like to find out more about what can be done to re-open the trail or establish new access.

Hello! I’ve always loved the hidden trail and today I found the fence halfway through. (Sad face.) Can you tell me why? Perhaps you can post a sign alerting people they cannot get through so they don’t walk down, then discover the fence?
Thanks! Sean
